Celebrations for The Lowestoft Energy Challenge
July 15th, 2009 by beccieThe acheivements of the Lowestoft Energy Challenge were celebrated in a grand way last Friday 10th July at OrbisEnergy in Lowestoft.
The work completed over the past 18 months by students from Poplars Primary School, Denes High School and Lowestoft College was highlighted by student presentations, guest speakers, and film footage.
The Lowestoft Energy Challenge was a project set up and run by Make Your Mark and NESTA. The project brief involved students setting themselves up as energy consultants - looking at ways in which their schools or college could use less energy and save money on energy bills. Following enterprise training, trips, and guest speakers into schools the students from the three establishments made a bid for money in April 2008 to fund their own sustainable energy projects.
The Poplars Primary were awarded money to erect mini wind turbines in the grounds, in order to generate electricity for security lighting. The Denes High School were awarded funds and are currently in the process of surveys being conducted so that they can erect a wind turbine in the schools grounds. The Lowestoft College students designed an internal sculpture called ‘SEA’ (Sourcing Energy Alternatives) which was then built by an Art and Design student at the College, and now proudly sits in the reception of OrbisEnergy.
Local MP Bob Blizzard, who was a guest speaker at the event said: “The energy challenge is the most important challenge facing the world - how to make sure we have the energy we need to survive, but to produce it in a way such that we don’t destroy ourselves through global warming. I’m delighted that this project has focused local young people’s minds on finding solutions, especially because Lowestoft has a big part to play as a leading centre for new technologies involved in offshore renewable energy. It was a pleasure to be asked to make the keynote speech on Friday at Orbis Energy. “
