Publication: Consultation: Impartial Careers Guidance

Responding to the DCSF consultation on the core statutory careers guidance, Enterprise Insight expresses our concern that the guidance omits any mention of self-employment and entrepreneurship. We recommend that references to self-employment and entrepreneurship is made explicit and make suggestions for where this could be included.

Enterprise Insight strongly endorses the proposal in the Independent Review of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that ‘enterprise’ will feature as a statutory part of the national curriculum at Key Stage 1 and 2. This response, therefore, is to indicate that we believe the proposed changes to PSHE could be modified for greater impact in terms of enhancing enterprise education in the UK.

Creating an enterprising London requires a focus on creating an enterprise culture not just promoting more business start-ups – understanding the attitudes and motivations of individuals and drawing on excellent practice occurring elsewhere, Enterprise Insight has suggested to the London Assembly. Enterprise Insight’s response to the Economic Development, Culture, Sport and Tourism Committee’s review of support for start-ups in the Capital, also highlights the innovative ways Make Your Mark operate and new work planned for the future.

Following the publication of the report, Make Your Mark convened a group of experts in the field of enterprise education (including policy experts, education experts and headteachers).

Research released today (18 November 2008) show a strong belief and optimism in the role entrepreneurs and business can play in the challenging global economic downturn. The findings have been released to mark the start of the UK’s fifth Enterprise Week which has inspired – and will run simultaneously with - the first ever Global Entrepreneurship Week.

There are currently 3000 business support schemes in England, and the government wants to reduce this to no more than 100 by 2010. As part of its efforts to simplify business support, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulartory Reform (BERR) carried out a consultation to gather the views of businesses, as well as private, public and third-sector organisations who are involved in business support.
