Will Lady Luck shine on you? Includes a Harry Potter moment.

Bloggers Circle has alerted me to an interesting blog about luck, and reminds us of the scene in the latest Harry Potter film where Harry pretends to slip some felix felicis in Ron’s drink, to boost his morale before an important Quidditch match. Ron plays perfectly, embued with near-magical powers by his mental state:

The blog also asks whether some people attract more luck than others. Personally I think you make your own luck, but that you can’t always control what will happen to you.

Here’s what some entrepreneurs think:

Inventor of the drumless washing machine Oliver Blackwell believes that successful entrepreneurs, like successful designers, make their own luck. “If you want it, you will get it,” he says, “But you have to be your own engine. I think 1 in 30 of my ideas works and I am far more fortunate than most. You do need luck but you have to make your own luck as well. You have to be your own role model. Be proud of who you are.”

Shelley White, a chancery commercial barrister at New Square Chambers in London alongside nearly 50 other self-employed barristers, says “The harder you work, the ‘luckier’ you get”. Many successful young women put their success down to ‘good luck’. In the majority of cases luck has very little to do with it but women always seem reticent to accept that their success is a result of their own dedication and achievements. Opportunities very rarely make themselves: it is your own diligence and commitment which will get you to where you want to be.

Bad luck can often lead to new ventures - both Matthew Crawford and Steve Kemp were made redundant and used this opportunity to set up their own businesses. If you’re thinking of setting up a business why not join us for an event which will help you turn your passions into profit!
