Make Your Mark Clubs Meet-ups - York
July 16th, 2009 by ZarinaThe National Railway Museum was the perfect venue for the Club meet-up in York on Wednesday 15th July due to the highly entrepreneurial background that lies beneath the free-entry museum.
The day was crammed full of activities encouraging students from several schools to engage with one another, create new ideas and to showcase the business ventures they had embarked on this year. After having delved into a range of games such as networking bingo and play your cards right, the student’s entrepreneurial skills were well-warmed by the time they had to set present their projects at the Meet-up Market.
Having not been to a Club event before, it became apparent that its a great way to display the diversity of entrepreneurial thought in younger generations. The ideas that they have put to action this year ranged from ethically inspired products to the idea of a ‘Study Budgie.’
After the students showcased their ideas, the ambassador challenge took place. Ambassador Vernon Kerswell, who started his Extreme Fliers business at eighteen, spoke to students about his journey from a student to an entrepreneur, all the while inspiring them think about their own path to success.
A speaker from the National Railway Museum then allowed the students to glimpse into the money-making strategies of the museum by running through their best-selling products, quoting the making price and selling price, portraying the large amounts of interest they make allow the museum to continue being free to visitors.
The day ended with a challenge being set by the MYM ambassador and NRM speaker; to create a new product for the museum. The entries were judged and winners awarded a goody bag.
The day was a really fun way to encourage students to continue working their on their ideas. The guest speaker, Vernon Kerswell, seemed to go down very well with the students as he proved, that even at eighteen; you can turn your ideas into reality. One student even asked for his autograph, to which he replied ‘you can buy it.’ Pure entrepreneurial behavior!
