Just So Films
Jonny Madderson, Jono Stevens and Will Evans are the young filmmakers behind Just So Films. Their work includes the acclaimed Black Cab Sessions, which have seen such artists as Martha Wainwright, the Futureheads and Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson perform intimate gigs in the back of a London black cab.
It is an exciting time to be involved in such a new medium as interactive video, Jonny Madderson says. The idea that anything can happen in the still relatively unexplored world of online film galvanises the team behind Just So Films. “It’s like the Wild West out there,” Jonny says.
The three founders met at university. None of them studied film, but they had always been interested in filmmaking as a hobby. They grew more and more ambitious after graduating, using the contacts they made working in advertising to gain experience, advice, and even to borrow equipment. “To start out we worked for reduced rates on some good projects,” Jonny says. “The clients were more prepared to try us out and got a good deal, while we were able to build up our show reel and cover costs at the same time.”
The Black Cab Sessions have become one of Just So’s calling cards, with the most popular films being viewed by over a quarter of a million people and watched in more than 150 countries. “The intimacy and integrity of the concept helps bridge the gap between artist and performer,” Jonny says.
Just So’s client list includes Google and Grand Designs Live, and the musical connection has grown with the trio filming comeback gig from the mighty My Bloody Valentine at Camden’s Roundhouse. The three filmmakers have already won a BBC New Talent award and been featured on ABC News and Channel 4’s 3 Minute Wonders.
