Danny Hargreaves & Leigh Humphries

A school trip to Africa Alive! was the start of a lucrative partnership between the Kessingland tourist attraction and two Lowestoft high school pupils. They won a Bright Sparks Award in April 2007.

Danny Hargreaves and Leigh Humphries have manufactured a range of jewellery that is sold within the souvenir shop and they are still only in year 11 at school.

The pair started working with Africa Alive! as part of their technology curriculum. Following a tour of the park, the two Denes High students received a business brief about their ideas for making jewellery and linking the designs to the themes already there.

A number of prototypes were accepted by Africa Alive! - the jewellery range includes bracelets, necklaces, earrings and key rings. all made from resistant materials such as copper. The pair have now formed their own business and their jewellery will continue to be sold this season.

Their work has also been sold in the town’s Britten Centre as part of Enterprise Week and Make Your Mark for Christmas where they diversified into card making, bird boxes and gift bags.

The pair also hope to continue their interest in the business through their respective careers - Danny as a resistant materials teacher and Leigh with his own plumbing business. Aside from their Bright Sparks award, the boys have also scooped The Unilever Award for school related work, which taps into industry as a profession.
