Meghan Barber
Meghan Barber is 19 and the lead vocalist of unsigned band Fawn who describe their sound as 'a cocktail of pop, folk and jazz, with soothing vocals, and emotive lyrics'.
Fawn have a fast-growing fanbase and recently supported signed folk artist, Martha Tilston, on her UK tour. Meghan recalls the first time she performed with the band as "the beginning of something beautiful”. Meghan has always been passionate about music and has sung for as long as she can remember. She had her first singing lesson at 16 and picked up her first guitar age 11.
Despite this she didn’t always know that she wanted to be a singer songwriter and describes her journey into music as a ‘happy accident’ which started when she was approached to join a band at Wakefield College. The band wasn’t successful and soon split but for Meghan it was the motivation she needed to form her own band Fawn and to start performing her own material - she hasn’t looked back since.
Just this year this talented young musician beat thousands to win a place at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, set-up by Sir Paul McCartney. Meghan auditioned three years in a row before being accepted at the prestigious music, which has spawned some of the biggest names in the music industry.
Meghan says: "I’m unbelievably happy. It will be my first time away from home, so I’m apprehensive – but it will be worth it.”
Meghan might be leaving Wakefield to pursue her music but she will continue flying the flag for her home city and is a proud ambassador for Wakefield’s Make Your Mark campaign inspiring others to follow in her footsteps by pursuing their dreams.
Meghan’s advice for other young aspiring musicians is: “Have the courage to pursue what you want to do and don’t be afraid. I’ve had bad experiences; one time springs to mind - we were doing a gig in a smoky grotty pub and people were being rude, talking over us and not paying any attention. You learn from stuff like that, the next time we played there we made them shut up and listen. That’s the kind of attitude you’ve got to have. Have the courage to go for it."
