Lucy Foster

By the age of 12 Lucy Foster knew she wanted to work in the theatre, but not necessarily as an actor. She's set up the Jumbled theatre company and also works as an associate director for Improbable.

I’m the sort of person who is very good at some things and very bad at others – like maths, science, languages. When I found drama, it made sense and I felt comfortable in it. By the age of 12 I knew I wanted to work in the theatre but not necessarily as an actor.

“I did a history degree but also directed a play at uni that led to a placement at the Bush Theatre. Then I did a workshop with one of my long-admired theatre companies – Improbable. I hung around long enough to make myself first useful and then indispensable and now I work with them as an associate director.

I’ve also piloted a mentoring scheme for the theatre community – looking at different ways more experienced actors and theatre-makers can support people at early stages of their careers. I want this mentoring to be more accessible so am looking at ways of doing this online.

“And as well I have my own theatre company – Jumbled – and programme nights of work-in-progress for other theatre-makers.”
