DIY Kyoto

Greta Corke, Jon Sawdon Smith and Richard Woods set up DIY Kyoto to make consumers more aware of the electricity they consume.

Ideas come from dissatisfaction with capitalist and consumer culture – wanting to make a change to the world around us. We all hooked up because of our interest in wanting to make electricity consumption visible so that consumers could understand more about how they use it.

“We all have different strengths – engineering, electronics and design - and come at the idea from different angles. We got funding for our Wattson – which is a home energy monitor that looks good, helps save money on bills and gives users the chance to live a life of less is more.

“When we got together and developed our idea we got a place on the creative pioneer programme at NESTA. We all enjoy bringing meaning into design. Our Wattson product is now selling for £350 in an introductory limited edition but we are busy launching it now and getting it into stores at a mass market price. Above all, we want to reduce carbon emissions on a global scale and make a change.”
