Aidan McCarthy

“I grew up in South West Ireland and was taught by nuns in a convent school. My father was a musician and my parents ran a pub so I grew up with music but wanted to combine music with visual arts.
“I was fascinated by special effects in movies. Then I got an unconditional place at Farnham to do sound and production management – I realised there that a lot of attention in film is given to the visuals but the audio really plays a big part in post-production. I love thinking about sound atmosphere and texture, the subliminal effect that it has in films.
“I spent three years after college working for a sound company but I wasn’t satisfied. A major event in my life was attending the Landmark Forum: this gave me the confidence to take responsibility for myself and do what I wanted. Together with three other sound friends, we decided to set up on our own and take sound in film in better, more creative directions. We work with many great film and TV practitioners – and intend to keep growing.”
