What people are saying about the competition
Joanna Shields, President, Bebo:
"Young people are living their lives out online sharing their passions, discovering and exchanging new ideas and concepts and using their digital literacy as a means of expressing their identities. Social Networks have heralded an enormous shift in the way in which people spend their time and have created new opportunities for young entrepreneurs to share and gain feedback on their ideas and to discover and offer support to good causes within their community. Bebo launched the BeCause Awards in partnership with UnLtd in Spring 2007 and the programme has gained enormous support from the Bebo community - we believe the Make Your Mark campaign is an exciting next step for users to impact social and environmental change."
Cliff Prior, Chief Executive, UnLtd:
"Social Enterprise Day is a great opportunity to engage with young people and to inspire them into action. UnLtd funds and supports some of the brightest young social entrepreneurs the UK has, and this day is a chance for us to expand our reach even further and to encourage more creative young people to put their ideas into action."
"We are really excited to be involved in the Make Your Mark in 60 Seconds campaign this year. The future of social entrepreneurship lies with young people and this is an inspiring way to reach young people across the UK. UnLtd belives in the impact that young people can have; we hope that MYM in 60 Seconds will help create a new wave of change that is inspired by young people, for young people."
Celia Hodson, Deputy Chief Executive, Social Enterprise Coalition:
'The Social Enterprise Coaliition is really excited to be part of the Make Your Mark: Change Lives campaign. Make Your Mark in 60 seconds is a fun and interactive way to introduce social enterprise to the next generation. The mixture of competition, social networking, celebrity and the chance to win £5,000 is a great way to get people on board.'
Phil Hope MP, Minister for the Third Sector:
“Social enterprise offers young people a fantastic opportunity to combine their enterprising ideas with a passion for social and environmental change.”
Phil Tulba of Make Your Mark:
“From community recording studios through to fair-trade fashion and lift-share schemes, there is an ever burgeoning movement of young social entrepreneurs who are making a difference to the world around them – and making money at the same time. Make your Mark in 60 seconds is a brilliant opportunity for young people to think about the positive impact their enterprising ideas could have.”
One of the UK’s most well known entrepreneurs, Peter Jones, believes that young people’s ideas can go a long way to solving social and environmental issues. He comments: “It is possible to make money and change the world but to do so you need to be as rigorous as you would be coming up with a purely commercial idea. Start small but think big about the impact you can have on a particular issue, and collaborate with others to help you achieve it.”

What is social enterprise?
'Social enterprise' as a term doesn't mean all that much to many of us, but you will have heard of many social enterprises - Jamie Oliver's Fifteen, the Eden Project and the Big Issue are just a few high profile examples. Social enterprises are simply businesses with aims which are primarily social or environmental and whose surpluses are ploughed back into the business or community rather than for personal gain.
Here are a few facts about social enterprise:
- Social enterprises generate £27 billion a year in the UK.
- There are at least 55,000 social enterprises with employees in the UK that fit the government's definition of social enterprise.
- Social enterprises exist in a wide range of sectors - from health to retail to real estate.
- A new form of limited company has been introduced specifically for social enterprises. The Community Interest Company (CIC) was established in July 2005. There are now 500 CICs registered. Find out more from the CIC Regulator.
